School stabbing spree: 20 hurt in Pittsburgh-area bloodbath
(Photo: NBC News)
As many as 20 students were hurt, some with life-threatening wounds, when a classmate went on a stabbing rampage through the classrooms and halls of a high school outside Pittsburgh on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

proof if you take away guns, people will still find ways to hurt each other

Yes, but let’s consider that for a moment: Thus far, there have been no deaths. All the victims are expected to live. In the Newtown, Conn. shooting, Adam Lanza killed twenty-six people in less than five minutes. Not maimed — killed.
A gun is going to make a person more lethal, in less time, from further away. With other methods, like a knife, the attacker must get close to their intended targets (versus spraying bullets indiscriminately), and this gives opportunity for others to run and/or subdue the assailant.
When the principal at Newtown tried to stop Lanza, she was murdered. The vice principal in this case was able to tackle the suspect and he was cuffed by the school resource officer. Yes, people will still find ways to hurt each other. There’s no reason to make it easier for them to do so.
Please don’t claim this attack “proves” gun control proponents wrong, or firearms advocates right. I will admit, my first thought was, “Thank God he didn’t have a gun” — however, when are we going to have a discussion about what leads a high school sophomore to this kind of attack as a solution? Or anyone, for that matter? Perhaps he had access to guns and maybe he didn’t. We don’t know.
The undeniable truth here is that for whatever reason, he chose knives, and that choice, in this instance, may have made it more difficult for him to rack up the kind of body count we have seen as a nation in similar mass attacks when a gun is used.

I’ve tended to find that, after shooting sprees, victims don’t post selfies of themselves recovering in hospital. Mainly because they go to the morgue, not the wards.

The Box: Teens in Solitary Confinement in U.S. Jails, Prisons and Juvenile Halls

Every year, thousands of teens are placed in solitary confinement cells in juvenile halls, jails and prisons nationwide. This animation tells the story of Ismael “Izzy” Nazario and the time he spent in solitary confinement in New York City’s Rikers Island jail. This story is based on an investigation by The Center for Investigative Reporting and was created using real audio from an interview with Nazario. It features music from Mos Def.

[censored slurs, violence, harassment]

blacksinperiodfilms:

medievalpoc:

Okay, seriously? There are literally 36 threads on reddit linking to this blog, and for a site that claims not to support harassment, there sure are a lot of people from the past week (before any other articles appeared) making tumblr accounts to send one message:

image

Once again, Black people in particular are being targeted by messages like these, and I can’t claim that this message affects me the same way it would Black people. But you might notice that that’s the point of this message: it’s a threat. “You have no history.” And that’s what these people are trying to “prove”, and if that doesn’t work, then come the threats, the slurs, the violence.

These links are being submitted by people with handles like “Death_to_SJWs”  (“SJW” apparently being a derogatory term for people doing anti-racist or other social justice work) and spawning off into other threads claiming they’re being “demonized” because of other messages I received telling me to “kill myself”.

There’s more that I’m not going to get into, but I’d like to take a moment for some perspective here.

I was asked a question, and I answered it.

This is an Art History and Historiography blog. Never doubt that there are people who are extremely committed to keeping our education, our media, and the images we see under control. People acting “surprised” about the harassment I’ve been receiving should probably take a moment to think about what kinds of environments you’re fostering: environments where bullying and harassment is not just tolerated, but encouraged.

I personally am not concerned or surprised by the backlash, although I’m surprised by how far it has traveled, in online terms. I’m not concerned for myself, considering nothing is made more dangerous by this than it is going about my business as a marginalized person in the United States. But honestly, those who consider themselves some kind of victim in this situation for fomenting spaces for bullying and abuse are seriously misguided.

I once again cannot overstate just how much very real resistance there is to these narratives, facts, and ideas becoming common and accessible.

You’re blog is amazing. I’m sorry you’re being harassed like this.

On a personal note: The fact that there are people against me knowing the history of my people assures me even more so that researching, studying, and spreading our history to others is an absolute must.

So that whole knockout “game?”

Apparently some old lady ended up shooting like three kids who ran up on her

Killed one of em, other two are in bad shape.

Can’t even say I’m mad but the thing I’m afraid of is some kids ended up getting shot just because someone is twitchy and on edge

Yeah see, I saw some shit like that coming .

no one’s surprised by it I just hope the fuckboys stop

What exactly is this “knockout game”? My parents were talking about it earlier but I’m confused. All I know is people upload shit to Youtube.

supposedly the knockout game (or polar bear hunting, I’ve seen it called that too) is a game where black teens try to knock out a white person

In a perfect world, I’d be all for this game but given the state of police and panicky white people hunting us down and shooting us in the fucking faces for asking for HELP, this is a decidedly BAD idea and I’m about to text my brother and tell him to NOT participate in that fuckery AT ALL.

There is no such thing as a knockout game. It’s been debunked. This is like that urban legend about gang initiations that involve flashing your headlights at a stranger & getting killed.
